The second planning anchor: Maui has very few legal RV campgrounds. Camp Olowalu (15 mi south of Kaanapali along Honoapiilani Hwy) is the principal RV-friendly West Maui option with vehicle-camp pads, basic hookups, oceanfront setting. Honokohau Bay roadside camping is informal and unregulated — Maui Police Department enforces against unsanctioned beach overnighting under HRS §711-1102 (criminal trespass).
Inland, Polipoli Spring State Recreation Area requires high-clearance and is not RV-friendly. Pasha Hawaii does NOT operate passenger inter-island vehicle ferry, so a Maui-island rental stays on Maui. Diesel and propane cluster at Lahaina (Shell, Aloha Petroleum) and Kahului (35 mi east, much larger logistics base). Read the Maui Visitors Bureau respectful-travel page before booking. Best time: April-May and September-October. Avoid August (anniversary period — visitor sensitivity peaks).

Parking ordinances that bite RVs
Maui County prohibits overnight beach-park camping outside permitted sites under MCC §13.04
Citation: Maui County Code §13.04
What this means for you: Honokohau Bay, Honolua Bay, DT Fleming roadside overnighting are not permitted. Plan Camp Olowalu or an approved private site.
Hawaii Revised Statutes §711-1102 makes unsanctioned camping on private property criminal trespass
Citation: HRS §711-1102
What this means for you: Kaanapali resort parking lots + Honokowai shoreline = no overnight RV under any pretext.
Maui County Mayor's Office: respectful visitor conduct in Lahaina rebuild zone (2023-2026)
Citation: Maui County Mayor's Office advisory

Your first hour in Kaanapali
Before you leave the lot
- Top off diesel in Kahului — Lahaina-side options are tight.
- Pre-book any humpback-season (Jan-Mar) stay 9+ months out.
Before you park overnight
- Read MCC §13.04 — no beach-park overnight outside permitted pads.
Also worth doing
- Confirm Camp Olowalu reservation 12 months out — only realistic West Maui RV pad.
- Read Maui County Mayor's Office Lahaina recovery page before crossing the bypass.
- Verify single-island itinerary — no inter-island vehicle ferry.
- Stage tank dump at Camp Olowalu or Central Maui Landfill.
- Pack respectful conduct: low profile through rebuild zone, no Front St photography of damaged areas.
The mistake renters make
Avoid this trap
Pulling into a Honokohau Bay roadside pull-off for sunset and assuming you can sleep there
MPD enforces under HRS §711-1102 + MCC §13.04; citation + tow recovery on West Maui is expensive and slow
