Spokane Municipal Code §16A.61 (Streets and Sidewalks) caps continuous on-street parking at 24 hours in the downtown commercial core and 72 hours elsewhere, and Spokane Police aggressively enforce the no-vehicle-habitation rule citywide. The closest serious campground option is Riverside State Park (10 mi NW of downtown) with two distinct campgrounds — Bowl & Pitcher on the Spokane River and Nine Mile Recreation Area along Long Lake. Both close winter loops by November 1.
To the east, Coeur d'Alene Lake (33 mi via I-90) opens the entire Idaho Panhandle network including the Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes paved bike trail and three Idaho State Parks. The Spokane region sits at 1,843 ft elevation but the Cascade gateway via I-90 climbs to Snoqualmie Pass at 3,015 ft — a moderate grade workable for any rig but chain-required Nov-Mar. Wildfire smoke from BC fires (typically Jul 15-Sep 15) routinely pushes Spokane PM2.5 above 150 micrograms.
Plan dump and propane in town, base out of Riverside SP or one of two commercial parks, and time Snoqualmie crossings outside winter chain advisories.
When to come
Best: Mid-May through mid-October: Riverside SP fully open, Coeur d'Alene Lake accessible, Snoqualmie Pass clear. Trade-off: smoke risk Jul-Sep.
Skip: December through March: Riverside SP loops closed, Snoqualmie chain-required, overnight lows below 20 F freeze water lines.
Your first hour in Spokane
Before you leave the lot
- Top off propane at U-Haul (2nd Ave + Browne) or AmeriGas Sinto Ave before any Coeur d'Alene or Glacier push.
- Buy a Washington Discover Pass ($30/year or $10/day) before Riverside SP — required for vehicle entry.
Before you park overnight
- Do not park overnight on downtown Spokane streets — 24-hour rule strictly enforced.

- Confirm Riverside SP, KOA, or Park Lane reservation before arrival; Hoopfest weekend fills 90+ days ahead.
- Fuel diesel + DEF at Pilot/Flying J (I-90 exit 272) before any Cascade or Glacier run.
- Check WSDOT Snoqualmie Pass conditions Nov-Mar before any westbound I-90 run.
- Check airnow.gov for Spokane PM2.5 readings Jul-Sep before deciding to stay outside.
The mistake renters make
Crossing Snoqualmie Pass (I-90) in a 40+ ft Class A in early November without chains in the rig or a chain-fitting plan. WSDOT triggers chain controls with little notice when conditions deteriorate; rigs without chains are turned around at North Bend or Cle Elum. A failed westbound crossing forces a 6-hr reroute via US-97 + I-84 east through Oregon.
