Portland sits at the confluence of the Willamette and Columbia rivers in the northern Willamette Valley. The Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area begins about 20 miles east of the city, and Mount Hood National Forest is roughly an hour east on US-26.

RVs cannot hold a zone permit and may only stop briefly to load or unload. Code enforcement (Portland Street Services) actively tickets and tows in Central Eastside, Northwest Industrial, and Sellwood. The second arrival variable is wind.

When to come

Best: Late June through mid-September: I-84 Gorge fully open, Ainsworth full-hookup loop running, dry-side dispersed camping on Mt Hood NF accessible, average daytime highs 75-85F with low humidity.

Skip: November through February: I-84 Gorge closures for ice and 60+ mph wind, Ainsworth closed October 31 - mid March, sustained rain (5+ inches/month) saturates dispersed sites on Mt Hood NF, and shoulder roads (Larch Mountain, NF-44) gate-closed for snow.

The mistake renters make

Parking an RV overnight on a residential street inside any Portland Area Parking Permit Program zone (NW District, Hosford-Abernethy, Northwest). Visitors with RVs are NOT eligible for any zone permit, and the 4-hour daytime cap under 16.20.120 still applies on top of zone rules. Citation under 16.20.205 plus tow under Portland Bureau of Transportation contract: tow fees typically $230-$300 plus $25-$60/day storage at the impound lot. Well above the $40-50 a night a real campground costs.
