Cascade Lakes Highway 46 closes annually from approximately November 1 through Memorial Day weekend at the Mt Bachelor Snowpark gate — every Cascade Lakes campground and Crater Lake access via Sunriver depends on that window. The Deschutes National Forest dispersed camping protocol allows 14-day stays on most BLM/USFS roads in the Three Sisters area, but the popular Wickiup Reservoir and Crane Prairie corridors fill within hours each Friday in July-August.
Bend itself sits at 3,623 ft and the route to Crater Lake's Rim Drive (94 mi south via US-97 + Hwy 138) crosses Diamond Lake at 5,184 ft — Rim Drive's North Entrance opens roughly mid-June and closes mid-October per NPS Crater Lake operating page. Smith Rock State Park (24 mi north near Terrebonne) is the Pacific Northwest's premier sport-climbing destination and the campground (walk-in tent-only) overflow lot accepts day-use RVs up to 30 ft.
