RV planning is shaped by three contexts: MN-61 (Highway 61) is the spine of Minnesota's North Shore drive and one of the most photographed two-lane highways in the country; the Gunflint Trail (Cook County Road 12) climbs 60 mi inland into Superior National Forest and the BWCAW; and Cascade River State Park (10 mi south) is the primary RV anchor with semi-modern sites on a Lake Superior tributary with a waterfall.
Judge CR Magney State Park (15 mi north) is the second MN State Parks option featuring the famous Devil's Kettle waterfall. MN DNR reservation window opens 4 months ahead — set a calendar alarm. Trail's End USFS Campground at the end of the Gunflint Trail is a dramatic primitive option on Gull Lake, requiring a 60-mi inland transit on the Gunflint that has been resurfaced in recent years to be RV-friendly but climbs and curves seriously.
Grand Marais city code prohibits on-street RV overnighting and the working harbor area is reserved for commercial fishing fleet. Propane: AmeriGas (Grand Marais). Diesel: Holiday Stationstores Grand Marais. Best season is mid-June through September.
