Ely City Code Sec. 9.03, Subd. 2 (Recreational Camping Vehicle Parking — Unlawful Act)
It is unlawful to leave or park a recreational camping vehicle on or within the limits of any street or right-of-way in Ely for a continuous period longer than 72 hours, except where signs designate the place as a campsite or in a mobile home park — and during those 72 hours the vehicle may not be occupied as living quarters.
It is unlawful for any person to leave or park a recreational camping vehicle on or within the limits of any street or right-of-way for a continuous period in excess of seventy -two (72) hours, except where signs are erected designating the place as a campsite or in a mobile home park. Provided, however, that during such seventy -two (72) hour period, such vehicle shall not be occupied as living quarters.

Ely is the gateway to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness — the most-visited wilderness area in the National Wilderness Preservation System. The city counts roughly 3K residents. Within day-trip range, two managed natural areas matter: Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and Voyageurs National Park (75 mi north), both staffed and posted online with current camping rules.
Diesel access along the main commercial corridor is best at Ely True Value at 301 E Sheridan St, Ely, MN 55731; the same lot offers propane refill. Fall Lake Campground is the dump-station address most travelers cite (free). Ely Winter Festival (first weekend of February) is the calendar item that moves RV inventory inside a 60-mile radius — sled-dog and ice-sculpting events bring all in-town lodging to capacity.
Plan arrival in Late May through September for the most stable window; avoid October through April. From here, two scenic routes worth a half-day diversion are Echo Trail (CR-116) Scenic Drive and Gunflint Trail Scenic Byway (CR-12). The recurring arrival error documented locally is trying to enter the bwca wilderness with any motorized vehicle including atvs — bwca is entirely no-motor; entries by canoe only, even from authorized portages.

Ely City Code Sec. 10.40, Subd. 7 and Subd. 8 (Camping and Activities Prohibited; Closing Hours)
In any Ely park or recreational area it is unlawful to camp or stay overnight except in areas designated for camping or designated for staying overnight in vehicles or trailers. All parks are closed between 10:00 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. except in designated camping areas. Ely's lakeside park lots close at 10 p.m. That, plus the no-occupancy clause in Sec. 9.03, means the rig has nowhere legal to sit overnight in town outside a designated camping area.
