The Door County RV story is one of state-park concentration: Potawatomi State Park (3 mi west of Sturgeon Bay, on Sturgeon Bay), Peninsula State Park (28 mi north near Fish Creek, the most visited Wisconsin state park with 469 campsites), Newport State Park (40 mi north near Ellison Bay, designated International Dark Sky Park), Whitefish Dunes State Park (15 mi north, day-use only), and Rock Island State Park (ferry-only access).
Wisconsin DNR reservation opens 11 months in advance and Peninsula SP sells out within minutes of release for any summer or fall weekend. Sturgeon Bay city code restricts overnight RV street parking in residential zones. Routes: WI-57 east-side coast or WI-42 west-side coast — both two-lane two-lane RV-friendly with intermittent passing zones.
Washington Island ferry (Northport - Detroit Harbor, ~30 min crossing) accepts RVs up to certain length/weight limits; check Washington Island Ferry Line for current schedule and rig-fit. Propane and diesel cluster at Kwik Trip in Sturgeon Bay and the AmeriGas in Sturgeon Bay; full Class A pull-through requires the Pilot/Flying J in Green Bay (45 mi south). Best season is June-July for water activities and mid-September through mid-October for fall color; winter is for cherry-festival ice fishing.
