Renting an RV in New Haven: what to know before pickup
New Haven has its own arrival logistics. Hammonasset Beach State Park handles both the first night and the free dump station. One street-parking ordinance applies to RVs here — cited in full in the arrival guide.
Street parking reality
Vehicles over 24 ft prohibited from residential streets overnight; commercial vehicles restricted in residence districts
New Haven Code Sec. 29-72
Dump stations & water
- Hammonasset Beach State Park — free, potable water
Camp the first night
- Hammonasset Beach State Park · 23 mi out · Electric on 70 of 558 sites; water at host station
Skip the classic mistake
Taking the Merritt Parkway in any RV class
Best window: Late May through June and mid-September through mid-October — Yale move-in dates aside…
The New Haven window to avoid
January and February — coastal nor'easters and DEEP state park closures.
What that mistake costs
Merritt Parkway bans all commercial vehicles and trailers; CT State Police enforce at every entrance ramp
Day one, after you pick the rig up
- Top off propane at U-Haul of New Haven, 30 Welton St, Hamden, CT 06517, on arrival day if tanks read below 30%.
- Drive direct to Hammonasset Beach State Park — New Haven Code Sec. 29-72 restricts overnight on-street parking in residential zones.
- Verify scenic-drive open status on Coastal US-1 east toward Mystic (some seasonal closures).
