Renting an RV in Palmer: what to know before pickup
Palmer has its own arrival logistics. Mountain View RV Park handles both the first night and the dump station. One street-parking ordinance applies to RVs here — cited in full in the arrival guide.
Street parking reality
Recreational vehicles may not park on city streets longer than 24 hours
Palmer Code + Mat-Su Borough Code
Dump stations & water
- Mountain View RV — $10, potable water
Camp the first night
- Mountain View RV Park · 1 mi out · Full hookups on 80 sites
Skip the classic mistake
Driving Hatcher Pass Road in any RV class
Best window: Mid-May through September — Mat-Su Valley summer with 18+ hours daylight.
The Palmer window to avoid
November through April — sub-zero overnight lows and Glenn Highway closures possible.
What that mistake costs
Single-lane unpaved sections, sharp switchbacks; rigs over 28 ft prohibited
Day one, after you pick the rig up
- Top off propane at Palmer Ace Hardware, 550 S Bailey St, Palmer, AK 99645, on arrival day if tanks read below 30%.
- Drive direct to Mountain View RV Park — Palmer Code + Mat-Su Borough Code restricts overnight on-street parking in residential zones.
- Verify scenic-drive open status on Glenn Highway National Scenic Byway (AK-1) (some seasonal closures).
