Michigan UP: 7 Days Mackinac to Pictured Rocks to Tahquamenon

This is not a 40-foot Class A loop. It is not a triple-tow loop. It is not a route you improvise the week of departure. Every drive-in campground inside Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore prohibits single units over 36 feet (Little Beaver Lake outright bans them per NPS regulation; Hurricane River and Twelvemile Beach refuse the turning radius) and combined rigs over 42 feet, every site requires a Recreation.gov reservation up to six months ahead, and none of them offer a hookup of any kind — fee is a flat $25 per night. The Mackinac Bridge is not negotiable either: high-profile vehicles slow to 20 mph in a wind advisory above 20 mph sustained, wait for escort above 35 mph, and the span closes to RVs entirely above 50 mph sustained per Mackinac Bridge Authority policy. Tolls run $5 per axle. The Tunnel of Trees on M-119 is the only Michigan state highway with no center line and is officially discouraged for RVs over 25 feet, so this loop bypasses it via I-75. Daily mileage caps at 220.

Elevation profile, the UP is a low rolling shield, not a flat lakeshore: The Upper Peninsula sits on the Canadian Shield and ranges from Lake Superior surface (601 ft AMSL) to Mount Arvon at 1,979 ft (the highest point in Michigan, USGS 7.5-minute Skanee NE quad). Pictured Rocks beach pavement at Munising sits at 605 ft, Grand Sable Dunes east-of-Grand-Marais top out at 880 ft, and Brockway Mountain Drive in the Keweenaw climbs to 1,328 ft of paved scenic-drive (Houghton County). Tahquamenon Falls Upper Falls sits at 615 ft AMSL — only 14 ft above the lake. The terrain reads flat on a state map but rolls 200-400 ft on every glacial moraine; M-26 between Houghton and Copper Harbor climbs and falls eight times in 47 miles. None of it taxes an engine, but the rollers ruin fuel economy — figure 7.5 mpg in a 30 ft Class C versus 9 mpg on flat plains.

Mackinac Bridge and Great Lakes wind reality: The Mackinac Bridge is 8,614 ft (1.63 mi) end-to-end with the suspension main span at 3,800 ft and 552 ft from water to roadway deck at midspan (Mackinac Bridge Authority). Sustained-wind closures and escort thresholds are tied to anemometer readings at the mid-span tower top: under 20 mph sustained, normal operations; 20-35 mph sustained, advisory and 20 mph speed limit; 35-50 mph sustained, mandatory escort for high-profile vehicles (RVs, trailers, motorcycles); above 50 mph sustained, full closure to high-profile vehicles. Toll for two-axle RV is $5; combined unit with trailer is $5 per axle. Cross northbound after 9 a.m. to clear morning fog and before 5 p.m. to avoid afternoon thermal-driven gust events.

Pictured Rocks length and water-access truth: NPS Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore operates three drive-in campgrounds inside the park boundary: Little Beaver Lake (8 sites, all 36 ft max, all reserved 6 months out, no hookups, $25/night), Twelvemile Beach (36 sites, 36 ft max single / 42 ft combined, reservation required, no hookups, $25/night), and Hurricane River (21 sites, 36 ft max single / 42 ft combined, reservation required, no hookups, $25/night). Per NPS regulation, no generator use 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. The shoreline boat-only sites at Mosquito and Chapel are not accessible to RVs or trailers. For full-hookup, Munising Tourist Park (city-run) handles up to 50 ft at $50-65/night and is the only practical staging campground if you want to dump and refill mid-trip.

Seasonal window, black flies bracket the summer: Late August through mid-September is the dependable window. Black fly emergence on the Lake Superior shoreline begins mid-May, peaks the second week of June, and collapses by July 15 (Awesome Mitten + Michigan State University Entomology Department joint reporting). Mosquito peak runs late June through end of July. Lake Superior surface temperature peaks mid-August at 62-66 F at Munising; swimming is possible only from mid-July through early September. Tahquamenon Upper Falls sees 50,000 gallons per second peak in late May (snowmelt) and drops to 10,000 gpm by August. Pictured Rocks Cruises ran a delayed start May 9 in 2026 (ice-out dependent); last sailings the second week of October. The hard north wind on Lake Superior produces 20 ft waves in October; trailers parked at Twelvemile Beach get sandblasted on the lakeside.

Fuel, water, dump — UP towns are 30-60 miles apart: Diesel pumps that fit a 40 ft coach: Mackinaw City (Marathon at I-75 exit 338), St. Ignace (Holiday at exit 344), Manistique (Speedway), Munising (Hilltop Fuel and Holiday), Marquette (Cliffs Ridge Truck Stop, Speedway, BP), Houghton (Holiday on US-41), Calumet (Pat's Foods Fuel), Copper Harbor (no diesel — top off in Calumet 49 mi south), Newberry (Holiday US-123), Paradise (one general-store gas pump, often closed). Potable water at every state park and at Bay Furnace. The 70-mile Copper Harbor-to-Houghton round trip has zero services on US-41 north of Calumet.

Cell coverage, the UP is a Verizon-only proposition: Verizon dominates the UP with usable LTE in every named town and most state-park loops. AT&T works at Mackinaw City, St. Ignace, Marquette, and Houghton; dead between Manistique and Munising, dead at Tahquamenon, dead in the Keweenaw north of Calumet. T-Mobile is dead across most of the UP except for I-75 corridor and Marquette city center. Pictured Rocks campgrounds have zero coverage on any carrier — Munising town hall sits 14 miles from Twelvemile Beach and is the closest reliable signal.
