Going-to-the-Sun Road is the reason an RV trip to Glacier National Park is worth planning around: 50 miles of cliff-hugging alpine highway over Logan Pass that only fully opens once snowplow crews clear nearly 40 avalanche paths. For 2026 the park expects full road opening around July 1 (snowpack-dependent), with the high country accessible into mid-October before fall storms close the pass. Two pieces of news change the 2026 plan. First, Glacier has DROPPED the timed-entry vehicle reservation system parkwide for 2026 - you only need a valid park entry pass, no separate vehicle reservation. Second, a ticketed Logan Pass shuttle program replaces part of the old free system, running roughly July 1 through September 7, and private-vehicle parking at Logan Pass is capped at three hours. The catch for RVers is hard and physical: vehicles and combinations over 21 feet long or 8 feet wide are prohibited on the road's middle section between Avalanche Creek and Sun Point. A 35-foot Class A simply cannot drive the alpine portion. The winning move is to base a right-sized rig at a hookup park near the West or St. Mary entrance, drive the lower road as far as the length limit allows, and ride the shuttle over the pass. In-park campgrounds (Apgar, Fish Creek, St. Mary) are RV-accessible but dry with no hookups. Bears are active all season - store food properly.

RV
Right-size the rig: a Class C 22-26 ft or smaller fits Apgar/St. Mary in-park sites (up to ~40 ft) and the West Glacier KOA. Critically, anything over 21 ft long or 8 ft wide is banned on Going-to-the-Sun Road between Avalanche Creek and Sun Point - a 35 ft Class A cannot drive the alpine middle. Base it at a hookup park and ride the Logan Pass shuttle over the top.
