This is one of the very few old-growth northern-hardwood remnants in New England and the campground is famous for fall-foliage September weekend competition. Reservations open 11 months ahead through the Vermont State Parks portal. The second context: Killington Resort operates as the largest ski resort in eastern North America (1,500+ acres) and the summer mountain-biking operation runs from late May through Columbus Day weekend.
Killington Access Road is a steep 5-mile climb from US-4 to the K-1 base lodge — RV brake management is the operational concern. Vermont's Act 250 and TRPA-equivalent land-use rules restrict dispersed camping on most non-state-park land in the corridor. Propane: Suburban Propane (Rutland, 12 mi west). Diesel: Mobil station Killington Center + Maplefields (Rutland). Vermont prohibits roadside RV overnighting under VT Statutes Title 23.
Best season is mid-June through August (mountain-bike open, mosquito-late) and the September 25 - October 15 fall-foliage window (book 11 months ahead). Avoid mud season (April).
