RV planning here is shaped by one of the most consequential vehicle-routing details on the East Coast: I-93 narrows to a 2-lane parkway through Franconia Notch (the only such narrowing on an Interstate in the U.S., per FHWA) and the National Park Service-adjacent Lafayette Place Campground is the principal RV anchor on the route. The parkway is signed for special caution and lower speeds; tractor-trailer restrictions apply but standard RVs are permitted with awareness.
Lafayette Place Campground (NH State Parks) is hugely competitive for September fall-foliage weekends — reservations open 11 months ahead and book out within hours for peak color. The second anchor is Mount Washington and the Mount Washington Auto Road (60 mi east in Gorham). The Auto Road has a posted vehicle policy that excludes most large RVs (gradient + brake risk on descent); rental policies typically prohibit Auto Road transit entirely.
Bretton Woods, Crawford Notch, and the AMC Highland Center are other peripheral options. Cannon Mountain (inside Franconia Notch SP) operates an Aerial Tramway with summer access. Diesel and propane cluster at Lincoln (10 mi south on I-93) and Littleton (10 mi north). Best season is mid-June through August (mosquito-late) and the September 25 - October 15 fall-foliage window (book 11 months ahead). Avoid winter — most facilities close.
