Independence Pass is the one to plan around: the state bans vehicles and combinations over thirty-five feet there, so a long fifth-wheel goes the interstate way through Glenwood Springs instead.
Nights above eight thousand feet drop below freezing by late September. Arrive with propane topped off, run the furnace, and don't let water lines sit exposed overnight late in the season. Color moves downhill week by week, and the ranger districts post current leaf and road updates each fall — check them before committing to a pass road.
