Arriving in Mammoth Cave, KY with a rented RV
Mammoth Cave is the longest known cave system on Earth — over 426 mapped miles per the NPS Cave Resources Management Plan — and the practical RV consequence is that every tour you want is on Recreation.gov 6 months in advance and most fill within hours of release.

Cave tours are not first-come-first-served and the visitor center stand-by line is real but unreliable in summer. Mammoth Cave Campground (NPS, inside the park boundary) has 109 sites, no hookups, and the closest legitimate RV-services town is Cave City (8 mi southeast) or Park City KY (10 mi south). The park itself sits in Edmonson County; the gateway towns sprawl across Barren and Hart counties.
Boondocking inside the park is prohibited except in designated backcountry sites that are walk-in (no vehicle access). For renters who need full hookups: Jellystone Park Mammoth Cave (Cave City) and Singing Hills RV Park are the two best-rated commercial options.
The Green River runs through the park and the historic Green River Ferry (NPS-operated, free) crosses the river inside park boundary — confirmed weight and length limits on the NPS ferry page apply; check status before routing through. Kentucky's I-65 corridor is the main approach (exit 53 at Cave City) and gas-station diesel is plentiful on I-65 but sparse on KY-70 inside the park. Best season is April-May and September-October — peak summer (Jun-Aug) overwhelms cave-tour capacity and the campground at the same time. Read every weather forecast for thunderstorm activity if planning the Green River paddle or surface trails.

The mistake renters make
Avoid this trap
Showing up at the visitor center expecting a same-day Historic Tour or Domes & Dripstones slot in summer
Summer tours sell out 30-90 days in advance; standby list rarely converts and renters lose entire trip purpose
