The Chincoteague guide
RV planning is shaped by one annual event that defines the entire summer ecosystem: the Chincoteague Pony Swim (last Wednesday of July), where the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company's saltwater cowboys swim the famous wild ponies across the channel from Assateague to Chincoteague for the next-day auction. Pony Swim week sees regional population surge past 50,000 — every RV camp in Accomack County and adjoining Worcester County MD is booked a year in advance.
The primary RV anchor on Chincoteague is Tom's Cove Family Campground (300+ sites with mixed hookup levels). Maddox Family Campground is the second town option. Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge (USFWS-managed, the Virginia portion of Assateague Island) does NOT permit RV camping inside the refuge — day-use only.
Assateague Island National Seashore (NPS, Maryland portion 30 mi north via Berlin MD detour around Sinepuxent Bay) does permit primitive RV camping at Assateague Island NS (Bayside Campground). Chincoteague town code prohibits on-street RV overnighting. Propane: Suburban Propane Pocomoke City MD (15 mi north). Diesel: Royal Farms Pocomoke. Best season is mid-May through June and September. Avoid Pony Swim week if not specifically targeting it.

Skip: Pony Swim week (last week of July) and active Atlantic hurricane evacuation windows.
