Bar Harbor town ordinance prohibits oversize vehicle parking in the historic downtown grid (Main St, Cottage St, West St) per Title 12. The closest NPS campground is Blackwoods Campground (5 mi S of downtown) with 281 sites (no hookups; pull-thrus to 35 ft); Seawall Campground on the western side of MDI has 200 dry-camp sites. Both reserve via recreation.gov 6 months ahead.
Commercial alternatives include Bar Harbor Campground (private, dry camp + W/E sites), Mount Desert Narrows Camping Resort, and Acadia Woods Campground. Mt Desert Island traffic on the Park Loop Road (one-way clockwise from Sand Beach to Otter Cliff) and the Sieur de Monts approach congest from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. peak season.
Plan dump and propane in Trenton or Ellsworth (off-island), base at Blackwoods or Bar Harbor Campground, time park entries before 8 a.m., and book Cadillac Summit Road reservations 90 days ahead.
When to come
Best: Mid-June through mid-September: Cadillac Summit open, all campgrounds operational, average highs 72-78 F. Trade-off: peak rates + Cadillac sunrise permit competition.
Skip: November through April: Blackwoods closed, Park Loop Road closed in winter, Park Loop and Cadillac Summit roads not plowed.

Before you leave the lot
- Confirm Blackwoods, Bar Harbor Campground, or MDI Narrows reservation BEFORE crossing to Mt Desert Island; foliage and July 4 fill 6-12 months ahead.
- Top off propane at Dead River Ellsworth before crossing to MDI; no large-tank propane on the island.

- Set a recreation.gov alarm 90 days ahead for Cadillac Summit Road vehicle reservation (especially sunrise).
- Fuel diesel + DEF at Irving Oil Ellsworth before crossing the bridge.
- Time park entries for 6-8 a.m. peak season to dodge 9 a.m.-noon entrance congestion.
- Plan Park Loop Road counter-clockwise from Hulls Cove visitor center; one-way enforcement.
- Buy Acadia 7-day vehicle pass ($35) or America the Beautiful pass at Hulls Cove.
The mistake renters make
Arriving at the Park Loop Road and turning the wrong way at the Sand Beach to Otter Cliff section. Sand Beach to Otter Cliff is strictly one-way clockwise; rigs entering against traffic face NPS ranger redirect and a forced 90-min loop back around. Cannot legally back out of the one-way.
