Motor homes may sit on a municipal street up to 24 hours, or from noon Friday to noon Monday — but you cannot sleep inside, even temporarily, unless the lot is specifically designated by the Department of Cultural and Recreational Services. Overstays trigger a $50 ticket and tow at owner expense.

The arrival window that matters: most Anchorage rental fleets release rigs between noon and 4pm, propane at U-Haul on Boundary Ave closes at 5pm Sunday (the only Sun-late propane in town), and Centennial Campground at 8400 Starview Drive — the city-run RV park — opens only May 16 to September 15. Outside that window you are looking at private full-hookup parks at $59-$79/night.

If you arrive between mid-May and mid-July you have 19+ hours of daylight to drive the Seward Highway pullouts for beluga and humpback sightings; arrive November-March and you are dealing with overnight lows that routinely fall below -10F, freezing black tanks within hours unless you are at a winterized hookup. Mid-June through mid-August: 18-20 hours of daylight, all Chugach State Park roads open, Seward Highway whale-watching pullouts free of ice, average highs 65-72F, all campgrounds operating at full capacity.

Season to skip

Late November through early March: overnight lows routinely -10F to -25F freeze black/gray tanks within 6 hours; Centennial Campground closed; Glenn Highway to Tok subject to whiteout closures; daylight under 6 hours by winter solstice.

Parking ordinances that bite RVs

Motor homes may park on any municipal street up to 24 hours, or from noon Friday to noon Monday. Trailers, semitrailers, and tractor-trailer combinations are limited to 2 hours.

Avoid this trap

Sleeping overnight in your RV at downtown Anchorage hotel lots, Walmart on DeBarr, or Fred Meyer parking lots assuming it is tolerated like in the Lower 48. AMC 9.30.220(B) explicitly forbids residing in an RV on any municipally owned or controlled property — and most retail lots in the Muni accept enforcement requests.

$50 citation plus tow at owner expense (recovery typically $200-$350 from the Anchorage Parking Authority tow yard, daytime hours only). APA enforcement runs nightly through downtown and the Muldoon retail corridor.
